Full Uniform

We covered all of these items during summer band and will talk through uniform etiquette again during all classes on Wednesday, September 10th.

Uniform Rules

  • Wear the full uniform at all times unless instructed by a band director not to

  • You do not individually decide when to take off any part of your uniform.  Only a band director will tell you when to remove shakos, or get in half uniform, or take off any other part of your uniform

  • You will never wear any part of your uniform in the incorrect way - your jacket backwards, pants unzipped, shako crooked on your head.  This is something you will never do.  You will only ever wear the uniform in the correct way - do honor to the uniform, treat it respectfully - treat it like it is important and your behavior in it will tend to follow

  • Everyone will wear the uniform the same way at all times.  You will never just unzip or take off your jacket on your own, you will never just randomly take off your gauntlets.  The only exception will be battery percussion and students unloading the truck - sousaphones, front ensemble.  Student leaders for percussion and tubas will instruct the section when to get in full uniform.  Band directors will discuss this procedure with the leaders of those sections

  • Do not eat in uniform unless instructed to do so by a band director

  • Wear deodorant

  • No make up of any kind in uniform

  • No jewelry of any kind in uniform

  • Hair must be off the collar of the uniform at all times

  • Hair must be pulled up so that it will be completely above the bottom band of the shako

  • The only hair we see must be the sides of short hair, or longer hair that has been pulled above the bottom band of the shako

  • Use hair pins, elastic bands and spray

  • No wispy hair coming out of the shako, keep it all pulled up

  • When wearing the shako, the bill will be pulled down so that only two fingers will fit between it and the bridge of your nose, measured vertically

  • Do not sit in uniform unless on a clean surface - a band hall or typical school chair, a stadium seat with bleacher cover or a bus seat

  • Use your provided uniform towel to sit on any other surface

  • Hold your shako flat in your free hand - three fingers in the front center of the bill, your thumb steadying it behind the bill.  Your elbow will make a 90 degree angle when holding the shako

  • Plumes will be worn at all times when the shako is being worn, unless there is rain or a good chance of rain

  • Feathers will only be worn for indoor performances

  • Correct shoes - white patent leather Dinkles, style 606 only, may be worn in uniform.  No other footwear is ever acceptable

  • Long white socks, never short, never any other color, only long white socks must be worn in uniform

  • Modifications of these Uniform Rules will be in place for Color Guard

    • The overall purpose of these rules:  Unity, pride, organization, continuity and honor will remain in place for the Color Guard

Undergarments

Body color, or skin tone color undergarments must be worn under the uniform.  When you shop for these items, please look for those that would match your skin tone most closely.  The uniforms are obviously white which means we can generally see what is being worn underneath especially if it’s a color other than you!

Long white socks (not skin tone), a skin tone color t-shirt and skin tone color compression shorts are the only undergarments that are acceptable.

Uniform Behavior

  • Do honor to the uniform

  • Act in a dignified way

  • No running unless instructed by a band director

  • No displays of affection in uniform

  • No horseplay or foolishness

  • No cursing, swearing or foul language of any kind

  • Act confidently

  • Act self-assuredly

  • Walk with pride

  • Keep your chin up

  • Be respectful of ALL, in our own band program, in others we meet and to all you encounter

  • Show strength when in uniform

  • Remain calm

Getting Dressed

  • Dress during the specified time on the schedule

  • Wear deodorant

  • Get dressed only as you were instructed to by the uniform crew, putting on each part of the uniform in sequence

  • If you go slowly, plan on using the full time.  If you are fast, you may use less time

  • However much time you need, it cannot go past the specified time on the schedule

  • However much time you use to get dressed, you must do so carefully, wearing the uniform as instructed

  • Plan to get completely dressed, all at one time

  • Do not walk away from your items once you begin getting dressed

  • Stay with your uniform and all its parts once you begin getting dressed

  • We want to avoid getting uniform parts swapped, lost or “stolen,” so each member getting dressed all at one time, completely, and in the order prescribed is how we will combat this issue

  • Get entirely dressed in either full or half - this will depend on the instruction the band directors have given the full group.  You must know which to do and then do it

  • Hold your shako correctly.  Do not put it on until told to do so

  • Plumes and feathers (if being used) will be passed out by the uniform crew at the appropriate time
