Hello Dragon Band Students, Parents and Families,
Wow, what a spring concert! The kids played marvelously well in groups both small and large. Also, what amazing recitals we had!! The students did incredible work and their performances were a joy to hear!! Thank you to everyone who attended and applauded for our incredible students!
I hear your concerns about the length of the concert and I agree! It was 3 hours and 24 minutes including jazz band that started at 6:15. That’s a long time.
A couple of thoughts…of the 14 days of school we’ve had since UIL on April 16th and 17th we’ve had after school events on 12 of them and we have 4 more after the 5 days of school next week. So in 19 days we’ll have done 16 after school events. Oh yes, we also had the Band Banquet. That’s a lot!! I say that because it’s very hard to find spring dates to schedule an event and then if there’s an open date, there also has to be a suitable facility.
Our option then is to schedule a chamber ensemble concert in late March or early April, after full orchestra and pre-UIL and before UIL, and make sure all the ensembles are ready to go by then. That is a significant challenge but we can rise to it. Many of them were not ready to perform at that time this year but they all wanted to play at the Spring Concert. I would be a bad band director to tell them no. We’ve held a chamber ensemble concert in the past (I think in March 2015) at the Hartfield PAC; 5 instrumental choirs performed and about 40 people came. For our next go round we’ll have a separate concert for our instrumental choirs and that event needs to be well attended.
Very few high school bands in the country have SEVEN functional instrumental choirs. That’s remarkable. What’s truly astonishing is that they’re all student led!! I would venture to say that our Dragon Band is possibly the ONLY high school program in the country that could make that claim. And they all play tremendously well to boot!! The students love to play together and that’s a chief goal of any music program.
